Conserving this nocturnal mammal for a Brighter Tomorrow

Goa’s unique mangrove ecosystem

The rich mangrove forests of Goa harbor a diverse array of flora and fauna. The traditional Khazan land-based fishing system employed by Goan fishing communities is intricately linked with the mangrove ecosystem. The livelihoods of these communities depend on the mangroves. Mangroves serve as vital habitats for the smooth-coated otter, providing shelter, food, and protection.

Life of a Smooth-coated Otter in Goa

The majority of smooth-coated otter populations in Goa inhabit these mangroves, sharing their habitat with fishermen. The positive outlook of local communities is crucial for the survival of otters in the mangrove ecosystem. Conservation need and livelihood support

In this project, we aim to study and comprehend the conservation needs of otters and the livelihood concerns of fishermen. Through a science-driven approach, we gain a better understanding of how otters adapt to human impact on the mangrove ecosystem. Simultaneously, we actively engage with local communities, empowering them to lead improved lives. Our educational efforts focus on fostering compassion towards otters and other key species found in the mangroves.

The success of fishing community-based otter conservation in mangroves lies in recognizing the interconnectedness between humans and nature. By embracing sustainable practices and promoting the well-being of otters, these communities can assume the role of stewards for the mangrove ecosystem, ensuring a harmonious coexistence for future generations.
