Endangered wildlife monitoring in buffer zones

Buffer zones are an integral concept in India’s protected areas such as wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. They serve as habitats for the wildlife within these protected areas, offering essential space for their movement, sustenance, and reproduction. Moreover, buffer zones significantly contribute to maintaining the ecological balance of the surrounding landscapes.

Conservation significance of buffer zones

The conservation significance of buffer zones is profound. Serving as crucial transition areas between the core protected zones and the human-dominated landscapes beyond, they are essential for maintaining the ecological integrity of these protected areas. Buffer zones play a vital role in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, preserving vital habitat connectivity, and serving as a buffer against external threats. Their significance is amplified by their lower level of protection, making them key battlegrounds for conservation efforts aimed at ensuring the coexistence of wildlife and human communities.

Monitoring wildlife presence in buffer zones

Within the scope of this project, our primary focus lies in the meticulous and continuous monitoring of locally rare and endangered wildlife species inhabiting areas extending beyond established protected boundaries. Our ongoing surveillance efforts encompass not only the targeted species themselves but also the dynamic landscapes surrounding them. Through this vigilant monitoring, our goal is to attain a holistic understanding of the myriad challenges and potential hazards faced by these vulnerable animals in their natural habitats. These regions assume even greater significance from a conservation standpoint due to their lower level of protection.

Our work is centred on the close observation and monitoring of wildlife species inhabiting areas that stretch beyond the confines of established protected boundaries. Through this vigilance, we acquire a comprehensive understanding of the myriad threats they face, ranging from habitat degradation to poaching and the impacts of climate change. Armed with this knowledge, we are empowered to proactively implement measures aimed at safeguarding these invaluable creatures.
